I liked this book but I wanted to like this book more than I did. The writing is great - captivating and haunting. The events are raw which I liked. My big problem is the ending. The ending was realistic but really anti-climactic as I was hoping it would tie the relationships together more. Also felt that some character chapters and details were unnecessary. Like he kind of threw in a bunch of backstory about the last character introduced at the end that really didn't add anything to the story for me. Additionally you get a chapter on each character and then never read from their point of view again which left me wanting, but also requires the reader to fill in the blanks of everyone's individual timelines using your own reasoning.
TLDR; The writing is engrossing, which is why I wanted more than I was given.I liked this book but I wanted to like this book more than I did. The writing is great - captivating and haunting. It was ok. The concept was interesting but ultimately 90% of the book depended on concept alone and not a lot of story progression. Much of the story is the melancholic existential wonderings of the main character. I'm usually into that sort of thing, but it got irritating to me after a while as the reflections were always the same and didn't vary in tone or content - "everything changes yet nothing changes and its hard to be immortal" kinda thing. I liked the flashback chapters much more than the modern day ones. I think overall my problem was that I didn't connect with the main character at all. His whole persona is being empty and sad and not much else. Which i get because he's lived for almost 400 years. But even in his flashbacks when he was happy he was BORING. He had great moral character but zero personality. All in all, it's somewhat thought-provoking - but it provokes the same thought over and over - and the characters are one dimensional. It was ok. Loved this book! Very few books have me thinking about "when will i have time to read the next chapter?!" Both sisters were well developed and you could feel the emotion from each character. Didn't get 5 stars because one character death is so unrealistic and cheesy. But besides that I adored this book.Loved this book! Idk maybe it's just me, but I didn't love this book. It was good but didn't have me staying up all night to finish it either. It was sad. And I felt the first half of it moved awfully slowly. The ending make it worth it but it was kinda tough to get into at first.Idk maybe it's just me, but I didn't love this book. It was good but didn't have me staying up all night to finish it either. I got more than halfway through and couldn't finish it. Nothing exciting happens for the first half on the book, I couldn't connect with a single character, and the first "twist" is kind of predictable. Not to mention the setting is unbelievably depressing.I got more than halfway through and couldn't finish it. I don't often get sucked into books, but I really enjoyed this one. If you are more into the poetry of a book than the plot then you will enjoy this. All events are written essentially in flashbacks so you piece everything together as you go. Good book. Wish more people read it.I don't often get sucked into books, but I really enjoyed this one.
