In this startlingly original vision of Canada, renowned thinker John Ralston Saul argues that Canada is a Métis nation, heavily influenced and shaped by Aboriginal ideas: Egalitarianism, a proper balance between individual and group, and a penchant for negotiation over violence are all Aboriginal values that Canada absorbed. An obstacle to our progress, Saul argues, is that Canada has an increasingly ineffective elite, a colonial non-intellectual business elite that doesn't believe in Canada. It is critical that we recognize these aspects of the country in order to rethink it's future.

This book may indeed tell truths about Canada, some of which I was not aware of. But for a man of such distinction as John Ralston Saul, this is a surprisingly weak effort.

Filled with questionable logic, numbers and a sore lack of citation. As an opinion piece it's arrogant, as a piece of intellectual literature it's almost laughable.

Says some very flattering things about Canada -- I just wish it were true.

John Ralston Saul posits that Canada needs to turn to it's Aboriginal roots in order to face the future. "A Fair Country" challenges all Canadians to find our true voice as a nation; to re-evaluate what it means to be Canadian; to look to our rich Metis heritage for inspiration and to our founding politicians belief that Canada could be a unique experiment where, "Peace, Welfare, and Good Government" could thrive. Ultimately, "A Fair Country: Telling Truths About Canada" is an interesting and worthwhile read.
