The previous (1984) edition is cited in ARBA 16 and is admired there. An excellent reference set for students and teachers K-12. Volumes 1-15 alphabetically cover individual peoples and cultures of mankind as well as urban life in world cities. The next five volumes describe specific aspects of cultures and social and economic organizations. Vol. 21 is new and offers a panoramic history of the world, from Stone Age to global village in 136 illustrated pages. Volume 22 is a rather disappointing index with little cross-referencing and a meager bibliography. The set provides a synopsis of essential ethnographic and historical information for 506 cultural groups, with 4,000 color photographs. The illustrations occupy as much, or more space than the narrative. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
