I liked this a fair amount but didn’t flat-out love it, which isn’t to say that it’s not interesting and fun – it is! – but rather that the main character, Adelina, didn’t immediately grab me and pull me in the way Day and June (the protagonists of Lu’s previous Legend series) did. I thought the premise for this was cool and intriguing, and I liked the whole concept of the blood disease-granted superpowers, and the ways they interacted with emotions, but I guess my overall reaction was that this felt like a very long introduction. I’m absolutely ready for more, and want to know what comes next, but this felt more like setup to a larger story to me.

This was way different from Marie Lu's writing in the Legend series. This was darker, sadder, and dare I say, spicier? This book toyed with my emotions and my sense of reality. I loved it. I think I need more. I'm going to go read The Rose Society now because Adelina is too relatable. And Marie Lu is extremely talented. WOW.

In Kenettra, a deadly plague of blood fever left hundreds dead and others outwardly marked by the experience. These marked, called malfetto, are abominations to their families who believe they ruin lives and reputations. Adelina Amouteru is one of these malfetto, marked by her silver hair and missing eye. She longs to be beloved by her father like her twin sister, but he only sees her as one of two things: an investment as a wealthy man’s mistress (or something else infinitely more worse) or a burden. But some malfettos have unique gifts like the Reaper and the Windwalker who strike fear into the hearts of Kenettra’s citizens. These are the Young Elites.

When Adelina’s father secretly sells her for a large sum of gold, Adelina attempts to escape in the night but is caught. Fearing for her life and enraged at her treatment, Adelina summons wraiths-shadows-phantoms who scare her father and cause him to be trampled to death. Though she runs, the Inquisition Axis catches up with her and hauls her off to be executed for her crimes. Just when she is about to be burned to death on a scaffold, she is rescued by none other than the Reaper himself. Taken to live with undercover with the Young Elites, Adelina is tested and trained as one of them, but there are a few differences that set her apart. For one, her gifts have marked her as dark and powerful, a threat against her new friends. Two, the Leader of the Inquisition has blackmailed her as a spy against the Young Elite. Three, she is falling in love with the Reaper. In embracing her new power and status with the Young Elites, she changes the fate of her people and her nation forever.

This is possibly one of my most favorite new reads of 2014 so far. I just loved reading about and being compelled to love a villain. You can’t really make up your mind whether you like Adelina, and this is a pretty cool thing for a main character. I liked Enzo (the Reaper) and Raffaele and the Architect and the other two girls, but Teren and Dante I abhorred. I was intrigued by the setting. I almost got the feeling that I was playing a video game with this fantasy novel as it had many elements of Assassin’s Creed, only more magical based (what with the inclusion of rich and prominent prostitutes and the obviously dangerous Young Elites who resemble assassins, not to mention upset people rioting or being murdered at whim by those in power). I also really enjoyed that I couldn’t predict what was coming. Entirely new ground, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book

I understand I am in the minority in my opinion of this book. However, here are some reasons as to why I didn't like it:

1. The main character, while yes is an anti-hero and this is her origin story, was an indecisive no body who asked herself too many questions and couldn't make up her mind about ANYTHING. Which was highly irritating.
2. The plot was boring and while I could appreciate that it tried to be ambiguous as to who were the bad guys and good guys, I just didn't care enough. The ambiguity led to apathy.
3. I am so sick of superpower YA books it's not even funny (but that's also probably the mood I am in).
4. The world made no sense. It was cool at first but just became another version of any other YA world.

Yeah, not my favorite. It made me sad because I enjoy Marie Lu as a writer and loved the Legend Trilogy but this wasn't worth it for me to want to continue with the series.

Different than what I expected, but still an interesting read. What I loved about these characters, especially Adelina, is that her actions are based on grief, revenge, and power, not exactly your typical heroine. I loved the Legend series much more, but I'm really looking forward to reading the next book!

Solid four stars.

This book was everything I wanted and more. The characters were totally my kind of thing, and oh my god, Adelina is a hell of a heroine! Some people might dislike her for her darkness and murderous thoughts, but the author showed all the different sides to her personality.
The other characters were likeable too. All the Daggers had different personalities, and I think Marie Lu did a good job with rounded characters. The story makes you really think about "good" and "evil". Everyone had their own motives, and it's all about the perspective. Another thing I liked about this book.
The author knows how much information to give readers, and I was glad to see small moments of romance with very heavy emotions.

This was a great book that had an exciting and thrilling plot and characters. The narrator is told from the villains point of view so there are many different outcomes, like, when the main character is falling in love or fighting for her side, then the outcomes if a hero was telling the story. This book is creative and unique from other dystopian novels. This book is a must-read and I would definitely recommend to a friend.

A very captivating read, and an unique one. Its perfect for those of us who can't relate to all the pure and kind-hearted characters. Adelina acts with an urge for revenge and power even though she rather be a "good" character. The plot flows fast and won't become a bore with long texts of senseless descriptions.

A stunning book with a captive world that draws the readers in. The plot is well made and is very thrilling and heart stopping. Unfortunately, I am a bit disappointed with how some of the characters were developed and how they were characterised. Much like a past comment, Adelina was hard to relate to in some situations and sometimes I found myself really hating her. This hasn't really urged me to read the next book, in fact, it's left a bitter taste in my mind towards this white wolf. Of course, this doesn't mean is might not be a book for you. If you're someone who adores mystery, betrayal, fantasy and romance laced with darkness, then this is the book for you.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.
