Hammett (education, Memorial U. of Newfoundland, Canada) and Sanford (teacher education, U. of Victoria, Canada) compile 12 chapters that question myths about gender and literacy, and specifically address the panic over boys having lower literacy test scores in the US, Australia, and Canada. They argue that issues of literacy learning are complex and that focusing on gender as the sole factor is misleading, when other socio-cultural factors should be considered. Through examinations of language arts classrooms, student online conversations, students' interest in digital games, gendered communication, and other studies, contributors address the following myths: that boys are more active and competitive and girls are quiet; that any male teacher is a good role model; that girls are doing well in school; that essentialist notions of gender are true; and that there is a need to go back to the basics.
