In this history of the social response to sexual epidemics, Lichtenstein (criminal justice, University of Alabama) develops a theory of colonizing stigma to describe how ideas about sexual disease have persisted throughout history. The theory is a new approach to stigma that is developed according to C. Wright Mills' 'sociological imagination.' The author looks at European colonization in the 19th century to explore the roots of race-gender stereotypes and institutional practices that discriminate against the colonized in the name of control of STDs and to demonstrate how these attitudes still undercut prevention efforts, blame victims, and blur religion and medical care. While there is special focus on Australia and New Zealand, the concluding chapter discusses how colonizing stigma is enacted through policies, laws, and social institutions in the US.
