I'm never quite sure if I really like Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler mysteries, as he's often objectionable and makes me feel like throwing something at him. The books are very well written and I usually can't put them down, but afterwards I wonder if I actually want to read another story in the series. I think that her topics have become darker over the years and this one is very dark.

Couldn't bring myself to finish it and I finish everything. Bad!

I love this series, but "Soul of Discretion", while eminently readable, isn't up to Hill's previous novels about Simon Serrailler. Subject matter not your typical mystery, and bringing family members into the thick of it just isn't "on".

Not one of her best.

No.Not this one.The old saying never judge a book by its cover applies. The cover is beautiful.. The contents, sordid to say the least. Susan Hill writes so very well and never dodges contentious issues but this one I think goes a step too far. I have read the series and I did request this latest Simon Serrailler novel. There are rave reviews. I, on the other hand feel like the little boy in the story of The Emperor's new clothes.I am not waiting for the next installment if there is one.Unlike the others in the series, this one has a bad feeling of hopelessness about it.I think she should call it a day.... Having said that, while not changing my opinion at all about the subject matter, in the light of what
has happened here recently with a similar character in real life, she got the psychopath's personality absolutely right.
