"Love him or loathe him, Ned Kelly has been at the heart of Australian culture and identity since he and his gang were tracked down in bushland by the Victorian police and came out fighting, dressed in bulletproof iron armour made from farmers' ploughs. Historians still disagree over virtually every aspect of the eldest Kelly boy's brushes with the law. Did he or did he not shoot Constable Fitzpatrick at their family home? Was he a lawless thug or a noble Robin Hood, a remorseless killer or a crusader against oppression and discrimination? Was he even a political revolutionary, channelling the spirit of Eureka?Peter FitzSimons brings the history of Ned Kelly and his gang exuberantly to life, weighing in on all of the myths, legends and controversies generated by this compellingand divisive Irish-Australian rebel"--Publisher's description.

This book is a big read at over 700 packed pages! However, if you are wanting to explore in detail the whole amazing story around the legend, then this book is the one. I like the way the author adopts a conversational style with the reader and divides the saga into easily digestible scenes and slices of information resulting in this marvellous though dreadful tale of the life and death of Ned Kelly. It is so incredibly well-researched it reads like a novel- who said what to whom in astonishing descriptive detail....
Fitzsimons manages to create a Ned Kelly that lives and breathes the unfolding drama. The reader is left pondering the events without the writer engaging in any heavy handed persuasion. Eventually you realise how unfairly power was stacked in favour of the wealthy landowners and how angry the poor became.

The author's astonishing achievement puts together an amazing assortment of material and creates a greatly detailed and balanced account of the people, the colony, the institutions and the attitudes of Kelly's days. It is not one-sided, it takes into account all kinds of people's reactions and responses whilst creating a vivid and deep experience for the reader. I could not see the point of Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang - why not just create a character for his book, so annoying and pointless to do this to Ned Kelly's actual life! - but FizSimons' book was an honor for me to read.
