The Shadow Guard was a very exhilarating read, with danger lurking in every corner. The characters were very diverse, and the main cast was very likeable, despite their different opinions on the situation. Secrets and betrayal are plentiful, so personally I had a really fun time trying to figure out who was good and bad. The perspective of the story was based off a maid, which was refreshing, because she faced different challenges than most other characters to save the world. The plot itself was fairly common, with a corrupted ruler and problems in the kingdom, but the author put an interesting spin to the plot, with the main character experiencing the destruction that one person can cause to a group first- hand. Overall, it was a really well- written book, and the perfect sequel to The Second Guard. 4/5
