The photos in this book do not do justice to the wonderful gardens of Bressingham that the Blooms have developed. Quite a few of the pictures in the book feature a winter scene of hoary grasses and bergenia in the beds while the mid summer photos have an overabundance of red crocosmia (at least 5 photos!) as the featured plant. Bloom provides 12 best perennials for gardens so that gardeners aren't overwhelmed by the extensive choices that perennials offer. All 12 would be available in local nurseries and the accompanying photos would help to identify them. Some are my favorites while other suggestions have me scratching my head - Ophiopogon "Nigrescens". He also includes a perennial encyclopedia with cultural information. Each entry has a colored photo of that plant. What makes Bressingham Gardens such a delight to visit is seeing the various color combinations, heights of flowers, and contrast of foliage and flowers in large flower beds. Readers will have to analyze the photos for any help with respect to good plant combinations. In this book, Bloom relies too often on advice such as plant a river of blue Rozanne geraniums. All photos tend to show beds with enormous space - not small garden plots. Even so, it was a book whose pictures delighted me and some even had plant combinations I could use in my garden.

One of the best aspects of a perennial garden is its ability to thrill us with a cornucopia of blooms with very little additional effort on our part. Adrian Bloom shows gardeners how to create outdoor “rooms” of flowering drama, highlighted by bursts of color, texture and height certain to thrill even the casual observer.

Using the “sacred twelve plants”, such as black mondo grass, hosta Francee, geranium Rozanne, bugbane, silver grass and crocosmia Lucifer, for example, the author showcases a host of appealing gardening options. Whether one has a small plot of land or acres of private sanctuary, this book will help any gardener make the most of it.
