The author examines the ways in which Eudora Welty assimilates and transforms in each of her major novels the concerns she inherited from Virginia Woolf. Drawing on Mikhail Bahktin's theories of the novel and his concept of dialogism, as well as various feminist theoretical perspectives, the author describes Woolf's influence on Welty as a creative, awakening force that led to her development as an artist. Each chapter considers a pair of novels, one by each writer, and explores both the dialogues between the two and the strategies both use to appropriate and revise traditional European based masculine discourse.
