Book News
These thirteen well-written essays touch upon many reasons for ritual and performance in church. The contributors begin with an examination of a Flemish dinner play involving a priest, a sexton, and a weaver. They then examine funereal rites in Sweden from 1880 to 1949, monuments and funereal portraits compared between Thailand and the Netherlands, an African town's public performances, the Yucatec Maya, reinventing the apostolic tradition, readjustments to Catholicism after the Trent Roman court, tournament in Sweden from 1259 to 1320, European and Chinese rituals, conflicts over practice in the seventeenth century, the Jesuit imposition of order, and the history of religion in performance. The articles are insightful and original, and the book itself is well-made. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
