A wide-ranging and balanced look at the future of libraries, considering the development of electronic publishing (till 2013). There is some consideration of "nightmare" scenarios - library services outsourced, or delivered without professional staff - and the place of the library in a networked and online social world, followed by strong appraisals of the skills of librarianship and renewed vigor of the concept Library as Place. The best part of the text is the final three chapters, outlining positive features for public, academic, and school libraries within, and in partnership with, the increasing pace of technological change.
