The House Un-American Activities Committee investigated allegations of Communist loyalties within the motion picture industry between 1938 and 1958. Actors, screenwriters, and producers were called before the committee and often asked to identify those who they knew to have Communist sympathies. Despite objections to this treatment, those whose names were mentioned often found it impossible to work in Hollywood again.
