The end of World War II led to a new sense of optimism that technology could solve many of the problems that a typical household encountered. A sustained economic boom provided many with their first chance to purchase consumer goods such as dishwashers, washing machines, and automobiles. Later, politicians such as U.S. vice president Richard M. Nixon would argue that such consumer goods demonstrated the superiority of capitalism over the communist system.
