The U.S. military began Operation Crossroads, the first postwar nuclear test series, at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands in 1946. For these tests, more than 90 ships were arranged in a lagoon in order to measure the damage caused by nuclear weapons. These tests, which led to the development of more powerful atomic weapons, also led to increased cold war tensions with the Soviet Union.
