During the last year of World War II, Japanese fighters flew suicidal kamikaze missions against American aircraft carriers, deliberately crashing their planes into the ships. The attacks were highly destructive, sinking a total of 26 Allied warships, and the suicidal persistence of the Japanese pilots was emotionally disturbing to troops.
