On April 12, 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage. On April 25, 1945, with the United States still fighting World War II, Harry S. Truman was sworn in as the 33rd President of the United States. When asked how he felt about the situation, Truman replied that he "felt like the moon, the stars and all the planets had fallen on me". Although some in the administration bemoaned Truman's ascension to the presidency, the public generally approved of his handling of the office in the immediate aftermath of Roosevelt's death.
