On March 14, 1945, Allied forces landed on the island of Okinawa, 350 miles southwest of the Japanese home island of Kyushu. The three-month-long Battle of Okinawa was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of World War II, leaving 12,500 U.S. soldiers and over 100,000 Japanese dead.
