The Alaska Highway was built during an 8-month period in 1942. Although the possibility of building a road to connect the United States to the Alaska Territory had been discussed for decades, it was not made a priority until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Soon after the United States entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized construction of the highway, which would allow U.S. troops to reach Alaska quickly in case of a Japanese invasion there.
