Franklin D. Roosevelt Requests A Declaration of War Against Japan Ca. 1941Unknown - 1941
On December 7, 1941, "a day that shall live in infamy", Japan conducted a sneak attack against the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, destroying scores of planes and ships, as well killing more than 2,400 personnel. At the request of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Congress declared war on Japan the next day. Three days later, as members of the Tripartite Pact with Japan, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, thrusting the United States into World War II.
