In September 1939 Germany invaded Poland. The German tactic of blitzkrieg, or "lightning war" featuring massive numbers of naval, land, and air forces, enabled the Nazis to quickly and completely overrun the smaller Polish army. In response France and Britain declared war on Germany, marking the outbreak of World War II.
