In June 1937, Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, embarked on a round-the-world flight, starting in California and mapping a 28,000 mile route along the earth's equator. On July 2, 1937, after completing 22,000 miles, the pair took off from New Guinea and headed toward Howland Island in the Pacific.
