Following the end of World War II, the Suez Canal became the center of a long conflict between Arab nations and the West. In 1951, Egypt declared that it was pulling out of a treaty it had signed with Great Britain that allowed them to maintain troops within the country to protect the canal. Within five years, this conflict simmered into a brief war known as the Suez Crisis.
