The combination of drought and over farming in the 1930s contributed to massive dust storms that swept through the Southwestern United States. The storms threatened the farmers' health and livelihood, forcing 300,000 people from Oklahoma alone to flee the "Dust Bowl" for other states. Many itinerant farm laborers moved to California where they had to compete for jobs against local workers who were also suffering the effects of the Great Depression.
