Chicago held a World's Fair in 1933 to celebrate the city's centenary. Held on the banks of Lake Michigan, the fair, titled "A Century of Progress", drew enormous crowds despite taking place in the midst of the Great Depression. Chicago's World's Fair was so popular that its planners extended its run by a year and was the first such exhibition to make a profit.
