Mount Rushmore, an enormous sculpture of the busts of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt, was completed in 1939 after 12 years of work. During the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt committed funds through the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) - a program that provided work opportunities on public work projects - to complete the monument.
