In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Irish nationalists fought for independence from the British government. After several failed attempts at establishing home rule, whereby Ireland would be autonomous from Great Britain, Parliament passed the Irish Home Rule bill in 1911. The bill was opposed by Protestant loyalists who signed the Ulster Covenant, promising to resist the establishment of a home-rule government. Home rule was shelved during World War I.
