The Panama Canal was built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, eliminating the need for ships to sail around the southern tip of South America. Conditions on the construction site were hazardous. Workers used dynamite to blast away rock, which was then hauled away by railcars. Mudslides and tropical diseases such as malaria felled thousands of workers during the 10-year construction period.
