British Troops Fight in the Greek Civil War Ca. 1944Unknown - 1944
British troops liberated Nazi-occupied Greece in September 1944 and brought the Nazi resistance forces - the Communist National Liberation Front (EAM) and its military faction, the People's National Army of Liberation (ELAS) - back into power under a British-supported government. However, some members of the ELAS resisted British involvement and a civil war between the Greek government and the Communist forces erupted. Britain sent 40,000 troops to support Greece but called in U.S. assistance in 1947. By 1949, U.S. troops quelled the communist resistance and a permanent cease-fire was signed.
