On June 6, 1944, the Allied army commanded by U.S. General Dwight Eisenhower launched "Operation Overlord" a covert plan to breach the Nazi stronghold on mainland Europe. In preparation, British prime minister Winston Churchill inspected Allied ships; resistance groups in France, Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands were alerted; and General Eisenhower recorded a message to be broadcast to the people of France, promising Allied victory.
