In the early 1980s, inflation and an increasing supply of imported goods contributed to an economic crisis in the Midwest. Thousands of farmers, faced with mounting debts and the possibility of bankruptcy, were forced to sell their farms. Representative Tom Daschle of South Dakota witnessed firsthand the economic crisis faced by his constituents in the agricultural field. In the House and later in the Senate, Daschle became known as a strong advocate for farmers, promoting farm subsidiaries and other forms of federal aid to farmers.
