Afrikaans Mounted Riflemen Ride Through South African Hinterlands During the Boer War Ca. 1900Unknown - 1900
The Great Boer Trek of the mid-19th century led to the establishment of the Afrikaner Republics of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. In 1899 tensions between the Afrikaners and the British came to a head when Peter Kruger, president of the Transvaal, issued a list of demands to the British. When the British rejected the ultimatum the Boers declared war. Against the superior forces of the British, the Boers turned to guerrilla tactics, using mounted riflemen who were mobile and difficult to capture.
