When he took the oath of office on January 20, 1981, President Ronald Reagan pledged to cut the nation's taxes, reduce government waste, and instill a massive increase in defense spending. The United States was currently in the midst of a sustained period of inflation, which raised the cost of living and led to widespread unemployment. Reagan's contention that "in this present crisis, government is not the solution to the problem, government is our problem" inspired many conservative politicians to endorse supply-side economics.
