In 1980, Polish shipyard workers led by Lech Walesa protested at the Gdansk Shipyards, demanding free trade unions. Walesa's new labor organization, Solidarity, became the first noncommunist union in the Eastern bloc. Fearing retribution from the Soviet Union, Polish prime minister Wojciech Jaruzelski declared martial law on December 13, 1981, arresting Solidarity members and confining Walesa to a house in the country for 11 months. In 1983, Walesa won the Nobel Peace Prize for Solidarity's nonviolent opposition to communism.
