In 1970, the Reverend Jerry Falwell founded the Moral Majority, an association of conservative Christians that sought to promote what it called "morality in public life". Its prominent support of Ronald Regan in the 1980 presidential election led to the growth of what commentators called the Christian Right, a bloc of conservative-minded voters who supported "family values" and opposed certain social welfare programs.
