From 1979 to 1992, Afgahnistan underwent a civil war between its leftist government and an army of Muslim rebels, called the mujahideen. The Soviet Union sent over 100,000 troops in support of the government. While the Soviet Union had superior firepower, the mujahideen, supported by the United States, consistently prevailed against their more powerful adversaries.
