With more than a million new cars hitting Chinese roads per month, the potential impact on global oil consumption and greenhouse gases is phenomenal. To accommodate this surge in car ownership, China is investing in massive infrastructure projects. In this film, Anita travels through the industrialized cities of Quingdao, Hangzhou and Nanjing, where the new middle class enjoys fine wines and luxury weddings while a lack of healthcare or social benefits drives migrant workers to suicide. Justin meets the Miao People, an ethnic minority struggling to retain their culture, and discovers a giant Mao bust in Changsha symbolizing the tension between communist and capitalist ideologies. Meeting in Shanghai, Anita and Justin reflect on the stark contrasts between China's richest and poorest. Can the country's economic growth be sustained? And what impact will that have on the lives of the Chinese people-and on the rest of the world?
