Representative Jack Brooks, a Democrat from Texas, announced that the House committee investigating the possible impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon had heard "evidence of governmental corruption unequaled in the history of the United States". The committee eventually passed two articles of impeachment. The articles never reached a full vote, however, as Nixon resigned from office on August 9, 1974.
