The creation of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its subsequent oil embargo leveled on the United States dramatically changed American's oil consumption. The price of gas rose rapidly, causing gas rationing and long lines. Many gas stations were forced to close temporarily after they ran out of fuel and were unable to buy additional reserves.
