On February 5, 1971, Alan B. Shepherd Jr. and Edgar D. Mitchell landed on the Moon's surface aboard the Antares lunar module. The two astronauts spent 33.5 hours on the Moon conducting experiments, the longest period of time spent on the moon by any astronauts Shepherd was one of the original seven Mercury astronauts and the first American in space.
