The Tet Offensive, a coordinated attack launched January 30, 1968, by North Vietnamese forces against major cities and military bases in South Vietnam, was a major turning point in the Vietnam War. Despite previous U.S. tactical victories, the breadth and ferocity of the North Vietnamese offense led many Americans to conclude that the war could not be won. President Lyndon B. Johnson was widely criticized for his handling of the Vietnam War, and shortly after the disasterous Tet Offensive announced that he would not seek reelection.
