The WPA Film Library; Calvin Coolidge Wins the 1924 Presidential Election Ca. 1925Unknown - 1925
On August 2, 1923, President Warren G. Harding died suddenly, thrusting Vice President Calvin Coolidge into the executive office. Nicknamed "Silent Cal" while Harding's running mate, Coolidge surprised his detractors, many of whom were fellow Republicans, by running a competent, level-headed administration after he assumed the presidency. Other Republicans initially considered running for the party's nomination in the 1924, but Coolidge became increasingly popular and easily won the Republican nomination. In the general election Coolidge handily beat his rivals: Democrat John William Davis and the Progressive Robert M. La Follette.
