France Builds Maginot Line as Defense Against Germany Ca. 1929Unknown - 1925
Beginning in 1929, under direction of Andre Maginot, the French built a line of defensive fortification at its northeastern border in order to prevent any future German invasion. The series of fortresses was considered impenetrable and included an underground railroad, barracks, and hospitals. Unfortunately, the Line did not cover the Belgian border, and it was from here that the Germans invaded in 1940. Today, a "Maginot Line" refers to projects doomed to failure.
