The invention of the telephone and telegraph made long distance communication possible as never before. The American Telephone and Telegraph Company, the forerunner of the modern AT&T company, built an extensive telephone system that allowed it to hold a monopoly on the industry. In 1924, the company demonstrated a telephone contact with Britain, the first such telephone conversation to span the Atlantic Ocean.
