Disputes Over Egypt's Control of Suez Canal Ca. 1960Unknown - 1960
Until 1956 the Suez Canal Company, a private corporation backed by Britain, operated the Suez Canal. In 1956 Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the waterway, putting it under government control. In response to the shut down, Israel attacked, backed by Britain and France. The United States, hoping to avoid war in the region, worked with the United Nations to broker a cease-fire and withdrawal of British and French forces. The canal, still under Egyptian control, reopened to ships in April 1957.
