Following the treaty of 1921 establishing Ireland as an independent republic, a rift developed between the Irish Republican Army, who took part in the new Free State government and anti-treaty IRA militants. In April 1922 the opposition occupied the Four Courts building in Dublin. The Battle of Dublin lasted from June 28 to July 5, at which time the British-armed Free State government was victorious. Victory was short-lived and guerilla civil war continued. In late August, Michael Collins, head of the Free State, was assassinated.
