The space shuttle Challenger lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida shortly before noon on January 28, 1986. It exploded approximately 70 seconds later. An investigation into the accident found that it was caused by a failure in a joint between the two lower segments of the solid rocket booster on the shuttle's right side.
