The Iran-Contra affair, during which administration sources revealed that it had used illegal arms sales to Iran to finance a rebels in Nicaragua against the express policy of Congress, almost led to the impeachment of President Ronald Regan. During hearings on the matter, John Poindexter, the national security advisor, invoked his Fifth Amendment rights and declined to answer Congressional questioning. While under oath at a later hearing, Poindexter claimed that he purposely did not tell the President about aid to the rebels.
