Michael Palin crosses the Sahara through sand-seas, along rivers, through oases and over mountain ranges. In a place characterized by ceaseless travel, from camel caravans to car rallies, Palin's love of people sees him chatting with locals from countries many people know little about. Dire Straits chronicles the fourth and final leg of his journey, from Niger to Gibraltar via Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria. He observes attempts to green the desert through oil wealth, visits Roman ruins and tourist sites in Tunisia-including locations for his film Life of Brian-and explores Algiers with a bodyguard, due to a fatwa against foreigners. Finally, in Ceuta he meets immigrants risking their life to get to Europe.
